Wellicious Is Changing the Rules of Yoga and Activewear

From performance pieces to considered luxury, the British-founded brand is challenging what we should expect from the clothes we wear to move, stretch and sweat

For years, the activewear industry has operated according to a fairly simple formula: make it technical, make it flattering, make it comfortable, and make us want the next colour.

But a new generation of consumers is asking more difficult questions. What exactly is in our clothes? Where were they made? What chemicals and materials are involved? And what happens to a garment when we no longer want it?

“At Wellicious, we believe fashion should never cost the earth. Circularity is in our DNA, and every piece we create is designed to return safely to nature.”
— Heike Petersen Cunza, Founder of Wellicious

Wellicious has been asking these questions long before they became fashionable. Founded in 2007, the brand has built its identity around a different vision of yoga and activewear: premium pieces designed with material health, circularity, quality and responsible production from the beginning. It is an approach that challenges one of the industry's most entrenched assumptions that high-performance activewear has to be synonymous with synthetic and disposable clothing. Wellicious founder, Heike Petersen Cunza, has always believed that style should not come at the expense of the planet, affirming: “At Wellicious, we believe fashion should never cost the earth. Circularity is in our DNA, and every piece we create is designed to return safely to nature.”

Rethinking What “Luxury” Means

Wellicious is making a case for a broader definition of luxury. The brand's pieces are designed to deliver the performance, comfort and aesthetic appeal expected from premium activewear, but with much greater attention paid to what sits behind the finished garment.

Its approach includes Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold, Material Health Platinum, GOTS-certified organic cotton, European manufacturing and circular design. Together, these certifications and practices provide a more detailed picture of how a garment is made than a generic sustainability claim ever could.

Wellicious also recently achieved the Positive Luxury Butterfly Mark with a certified score of 95. The assessment considers environmental, social and governance performance across a broad range of criteria, making it recognition of the wider business rather than simply one fabric or product. For a fashion industry increasingly scrutinised for greenwashing, this distinction really matters.

What Are We Actually Wearing?

Activewear is worn close to the skin and designed to withstand movement, heat and repeated washing. Yet the materials used to make it have historically received far less attention than their technical performance. Wellicious puts material health at the centre of its design philosophy, considering what goes into its fabrics and products as well as how they perform.

Designing For a Circular Future

Wellicious is also challenging the traditional “make, buy, discard” model of fashion. Circularity is embedded into its approach, with consideration given to materials, quality, longevity and what happens to products beyond their first life. The objective is to create premium pieces that are made to be worn and kept, rather than quickly replaced.

A New Definition of Yoga and Activewear

One of the most compelling things about Wellicious is the questions it encourages consumers to ask, querying what the garment is made from, where it was produced, what standards it meets, and what happens at the end of its life.

In a market crowded with sustainability claims, Wellicious is putting greater emphasis on evidence, certification and transparency. If the future of fashion is about buying fewer and better pieces, Wellicious is already moving in that direction, proving that the next generation of luxury activewear may be defined not just by how it looks and performs, but by how responsibly it is made.
