From the French Riviera to Portugal: The iconic MOKE Arrives in Lisbon and Porto

The iconic British electric vehicle becomes part of the guest experience across three boutique hotels in Lisbon and Porto, offering travellers a new way to discover Portugal at their own pace.

Independent Portuguese hotel group Bomporto Hotels has partnered with British automotive brand MOKE International to introduce fully electric MOKEs across its three boutique hotels in Lisbon and Porto —  The Lumiares Hotel & Spa and The Vintage Hotel & Spa in Lisbon, as well as The Rebello in Porto— creating a new destination-led experience for guests.

The collaboration marks the first availability of Electric MOKE vehicles through a hotel partnership in Portugal, bringing together British automotive heritage and Portuguese hospitality to offer travellers a more personal, flexible and lower-impact way to explore Lisbon and Porto.

All three Bomporto Hotels properties are members of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), reflecting the group’s positioning within the international luxury independent hotel sector.

Available from July 2026, guests can access Electric MOKEs through the Bomporto guest app or directly via the hotels’ Guest Relations teams, with suggested routes, local recommendations and the freedom to explore each destination at their own pace.

More than a means of transport, the experience represents an extension of the hotel journey — creating another touchpoint between guests and the destination while reflecting a wider shift in hospitality towards more personalised, experience-led travel.

A new approach to destination discovery

The partnership reflects a growing trend across luxury travel, as guests increasingly seek meaningful experiences, local connection and the freedom to discover destinations in a more spontaneous way.

Rather than following a fixed itinerary, the Electric MOKE experience encourages guests to take a slower approach to exploring Lisbon and Porto — using suggested routes as inspiration while allowing time to stop, wander and experience each destination at their own pace.

Each property features its own fleet of fully electric MOKEs in signature colours including Palm Green, Eucalyptus Green, Shell White and Wave Blue, reflecting the playful yet design-led character shared by both brands.

For Bomporto Hotels, the collaboration builds on an existing approach to hospitality: encouraging guests to connect with local neighbourhoods, communities and experiences beyond the hotel itself.

“We’ve always felt that the best way to see a place like Lisbon or Porto is not to over-plan it. It’s about the freedom to get a little lost, to stop when something catches your eye, to follow a recommendation from someone local and see where that takes you. That’s really what this is about for us, and the MOKE just fits into that mindset in a very natural way,” says Nick Roucos, Managing Director of Bomporto Hotels and SLH Ambassador for Portugal.

For MOKE International, the partnership reflects the increasing demand for travel experiences that feel personal, flexible and connected to place.

“Luxury travellers are also looking for experiences that feel personal rather than prescribed, with the freedom to discover a destination on their own terms,” says Robin Kennedy, Co-Founder and Commercial Director at MOKE International.

“That’s where we believe the MOKE resonates because it encourages a slower, more immersive way of experiencing a place.”

Exploring Lisbon and Porto at your own pace

At The Rebello, overlooking Porto from Vila Nova de Gaia, guests can explore suggested routes along the Douro riverfront, discover the Atlantic coastline through Foz and Matosinhos, and enjoy viewpoints offering new perspectives over the city and surrounding region.

In Lisbon, suggested routes include riverside drives through Belém, neighbourhood discoveries across the city and coastal escapes towards Cascais and Guincho, allowing guests to experience different sides of the destination.

Hotels can also create bespoke experiences, including picnic options that combine Portugal’s landscapes with relaxed outdoor dining.

A British icon reimagined for electric travel

Originally designed in Britain in the early 1960s by Sir Alec Issigonis, creator of the Austin Mini, the MOKE quickly became a global lifestyle icon associated with destinations including the French Riviera, California and Australia.

The vehicle became synonymous with relaxed coastal living and was embraced by cultural icons including The Beatles, Brigitte Bardot and James Bond.

Today, MOKE has been reinvented as a fully electric vehicle, designed and handcrafted in Northamptonshire, England, combining its distinctive British heritage with modern electric technology.
