Hidden away on Portugal’s sun‑kissed southern coast, Vila Joya is a hidden gem.  With just a handful of suites and rooms, a culinary reputation that stretches far beyond the Algarve, manicured lawns, and a front-row seat to the Atlantic Ocean, this boutique hotel promises a discreet luxurious experience.

Hotel

Together with just 13 rooms (nine suites and four rooms) and lush gardens, Vila Joya feels like a large private villa; the atmosphere is hushed and exclusive, but never stuffy.  Owned by the Jung family for over 40 years, the ‘home away from home’ hotel blends relaxed luxury with refined details such as sandstone arches, azulejo tiles, and a two-Michelin-starred restaurant headed up by Austrian chef Dieter Koschina.  Facilities include a spa with a floating room, rooftop sauna, Turkish bath, whirlpool tub, tennis court, bike rental, two outdoor swimming pools, and a small gym.

Location

Vila Joya sits just to the west of Albufeira and is a 40-minute drive from Faro airport.  Below the hotel, a boardwalk leads down to the golden sands of Praia da Galé beach, while five championship golf courses lie within a 15‑minute radius.  Day trips to the sea caves of Benagil, the cork‑oak area of Monchique, or wine tastings near Lagoa are also an easy drive away.

Check‑in and first impressions

The hotel entrance leads you though to a stunning terrace, looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean, where check-in takes place over a freshly shaken welcome cocktail or mocktail.  The entire process feels smooth, personal, and relaxed, setting the tone for a peaceful stay.

Room

All 13 rooms face south‑west, making the most of the Algarve light and guaranteeing that every room comes with a sunset view.  Entry‑level Deluxe Double rooms are a generous 30-40 sq m with four‑poster beds draped in Egyptian cotton, hand‑painted tiles, terracotta floors, and smart homely touches.  Junior Suite Saudade is unlike any other with a freestanding bath tub and breathtaking sea views from its open-plan bathroom.  The Royal Suite Alegria offers 140 sq m of tranquillity with its contemporary Portuguese interior design, heated pool, and outdoor shower; it is the largest suite at Vila Joya and undoubtedly a contender for the most beautiful.

Food and drink

Vila Joya is home to two world class restaurants: a two-Michelin-starred restaurant headed up by Austrian chef Dieter Koschina, as well as a more relaxed yet equally impressive beach shack, Vila Joya Sea, headed up by both chef Rafael Oyama and chef Hiram González.  It would be a sin to miss dining at either restaurant. ‍ ‍

Vila Joya’s Michelin-starred restaurant offers an unforgettable open-air dining experience with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.  It has proudly held its two Michelin stars for over 20 years, the first in Portugal to reach this milestone, and continues to impress with a dynamic menu crafted from the freshest seasonal ingredients.  I had the privilege of enjoying chef Dieter Koschina’s 13-course ‘Favourites’ tasting menu, where each dish showcased exceptional skill, creativity, and flavour.

Down by the beach, Vila Joya Sea presents a different kind of culinary journey.  From Wednesday to Sunday, it serves contemporary Japanese and Pan-Asian cuisine, while Mondays and Tuesdays are reserved for vibrant Mexican dishes by The Flying Chefs.  Both offerings are well worth experiencing, the talent and passion of the chefs shine through in every beautifully presented plate.  Adding to the allure, the restaurant undergoes a full transformation each year, with new décor and a fresh culinary concept, ensuring returning guests always have something new to discover.

To do

Aside from making sure you eat at both of the excellent onsite restaurants, I highly recommend you book an Aquatic Therapy session in the custom designed floatation pool at the Vila Joya spa - the relaxing treatment will leave you on cloud nine.  Alternatively, concierge can organise sunrise paddle‑boarding, a yacht to the Benagil sea caves, or a round of golf at nearby Salgados and the cliff‑top Sir Henry Cotton course at Penina.

In a nutshell

Vila Joya truly feels special.  It exceeds every expectation: just 13 exclusive rooms, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant that helped shape modern Portuguese cuisine, attentive and friendly staff, and a sunset terrace that will linger in your mind long after you leave.  Come for a long weekend, and I promise, you will not want to leave - it is no surprise that many of the hotel’s guests return year after year.
